If you’re sexually active, STD testing is the best way to ensure you’re healthy, even if you don’t notice any worrying symptoms. Getting testing and treatment not only helps you stay healthy, but it also prevents the spread of STDs to others.
Almost anyone who is sexually active can benefit from STD testing, especially those who’ve had more than one sexual partner or those whose partner has had more than one sexual partner.

Who should get tested for STDs?
The Center for Disease Control and Prevent (CDC) guidelines suggest that sexually active adults and teenagers alike benefit from getting tested on a yearly basis for gonorrhea and chlamydia. Pregnant women are often tested for syphilis HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, as these particular STDs can lead to birth defects.
You may need yearly testing if you’re committed to one partner and practice safe sex, and you don’t have a history of STDs. More frequent testing may be recommended if you have more than one sexual partner or practice unsafe sex.
Certain symptoms should also prompt you to seek testing. These include the following:
- Discharge from the genitals
- Rashes or warts around the genitals
- Itchiness around the genitals
- Bleeding in the genital area
In rare cases, warts in the throat or mouth may also indicate an untreated STD.
What can you expect during STD testing?
STD testing may entail a urine sample, a cheek swab, or a blood sample. Depending on the type of STD testing you undertake, it can take anywhere between two and three days to receive your results.
If you’re expecting the test to be negative but test positive for an STD, keep in mind that most STDs are easy to treat and manage with the right medications.
